This work is a list of sailors and marines who were accredited to the State of Maryland during the Civil War. The Maryland sailors were a gallant bunch and were a vital part of the Civil War. A draft of Baltimore sailors rendered aid with Commodore A. H. Foote’s Mississippi River Flotilla in 1861-1862 and aided in opening the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers to navigation and the capture of Forts Henry and Donelson in February 1862 and again in March 1862. In April 1862, the Maryland sailors were on fleets under the guidance of Admirals Porter and Farragut that resulted in the capture of New Orleans and the final surrender of the last obstacles at Port Hudson and Vicksburg. Also included are the colored infantry regiments of Maryland volunteers. The book contains over 5,000 names and the records include the sailor/officers name, rank, date of enlistment, date of discharge, vessels they served on and remarks. The listings are in alphabetical order. It’s a must have for any Civil War researcher!
