Description: Having collected considerable information on the 3rd English-Waldeck Regiment and having translated the diary of the regimental chaplain, Philip Waldeck; the memoir of a quartermaster sergeant, Karl Philipp Steuernagel; and an autograph book of the unit's auditor, Philipp Marc; the author has constructed a history of the regiment's activities in the Revolution, 1776-1783. Firm in the belief that no county's history can be considered complete if the "enemy soldier" is not understood, Mr. Burgoyne has tried to trace the activities of individuals as well as the regiment as a whole. This volume follows the personnel of the Waldeck Regiment year by year, beginning with their departure from Europe and arrival in America. Transfers, desertions, prisoners of war, and deaths from illness and battle are all detailed here. Troop movements and activities are also well documented. Sources include dozens of journals and manuscripts from the British Museum, Library of Congress and University of Michigan Clements Library. A helpful feature of this volume is the assignment of serial numbers to individuals. Mr. Burgoyne is a recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Revolution Roundtable of Philadelphia.
