In 1855 the Old Settlers' Society was formed with the object of recording the remembrances and biographies of the early settlers in the region, who first came in 1824. The first seven chapters of this inimitable work contain the minutes of the Old Settlers' Society meetings, including lists of the names of the settlers, where they were born, their ages and dates of settlement, plus anecdotes concerning immigration to the area, Indians, crops, elections, individuals of note, epidemics, registers of deaths, and other matters of the community. Later chapters contain reprinted newspaper articles relating to the history of Carroll County, "Recollections of Early Settlers," several great fires, churches, letters from eminent men, biographical sketches, "departed veterans," circuit court proceedings, elections, lists of judges and jurors, benevolent institutions and members, county commissioners, representatives, senators, justices of the peace, and other county officials, voters' names, and an extensive War Record which includes the names of all the officers and soldiers of Carroll County who served in the Mexican and Civil Wars.
