Mr. Hurley's Our Maryland Heritage series continues with this book, which investigates the Higgins families, primarily of Montgomery County, but also includes family members found in other Maryland counties and elsewhere. Chapter one presents the scant information available about John Higgins (b. c1709), who appears to be the common ancestor of most, if not all, of the Higgins families found in Montgomery County today. More data is available regarding his son, James William Higgins, who was born November 17, 1733 in an area of Prince George's County, Maryland, that subsequently became Frederick County in 1748, and finally Montgomery County in 1776. Additional chapters are devoted to Benjamin Higgins (1770); James Hilleary Higgins (1792); Mary Higgins (1795); Susan Hawkins Clagett (1823); and James Becraft Higgins (1772). The final chapter contains miscellaneous information about members of the Higgins family in Montgomery County that have not been connected to the families discussed in earlier chapters. Many of the generations are traced up to the present time. The data contained in this report has been prepared from information found in a variety of sources, including records found at the library of the Montgomery County Historical Society, such as family files, church and cemetery records, obituary collections and the published books and abstracts held by the library in their research collection; as well as the personal library of the author, and earlier family studies. A bibliography and a full name index are included.
