The Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company, first incorporated in the City of Washington to serve freed slaves, grew to include thirty-three branches in over two dozen cities along the U.S. eastern seaboard. When opening an account, a depositor was required to complete a signature register that often contained, among other items, data on the depositor’s place of birth, residence, age, complexion, height, spouse, parents and signature. Additional data may be found about the name of the master or mistress, name of the associated plantation, children, or occupation. This work contains the first block signature register entries for the period August 26, 1875 to April 1868.
