Within this book are three main divisions: "The Irish Scots and the Scotch-Irish," "How the Irish Came as Builders of the Nation" and "Supplementary Facts and Comment." The book begins with some discussion of the early history of these people, explaining how the Scottish Highlanders came originally from Ireland, and thus Scotland and Ireland were closely connected in blood, language and religion. Readers will learn the connection between the history of the Celts, Saxons, Normans, various religions and the Gaelic language. There is an impressive list of surnames of those who left Ireland for the American colonies in the 1700s. The book tells of many Irish settlers who played prominent parts in the history of the young republic at all levels. In the last third of the book is a list of surnames of Irish natives to whom land was set apart in the Plantation of Ulster in the early 1600s, as well as a long list of individuals granted land in this Plantation. There is also a list of Scottish names derived from Irish ones.
