Description: Fascinating story of the Moravian missionaries who came to America (1730s-1740s) to bring Christianity to the Indians. They founded Bethlehem and Nazareth in Pennsylvania and Salem in North Carolina as bases for their missionary work and established the first Christian communities in Ohio. Teachers of compassion, they abhorred war. Yet their missionary efforts took place during the French & Indian War, Pontiac's War, the Revolutionary War, the Indian Wars in Ohio, and the War of 1812. Among the Moravian missionaries were ancestors of George W. Bush. The book relates the role of the Demuth family in the reorganization of the Moravian Church at Herrnhut, Saxony (1720s), the early missionary work in Georgia (1730s), the settlement of Bethlehem and Nazareth, Pennsylvania (1740s), and Gnadenhutten, Ohio (early 1800s). Extensive genealogical information on the Demuth family is provided, as well as other Ohio pioneer families from whom Barbara Bush and the President are descended. This work also includes an appendix listing the ancestors of George W. Bush, and an appendix listing the descendants of Christopher and Elizabeth Demuth.
