Dorothy Francis Atkinson, the granddaughter of a Confederate veteran, was born and raised on a section of the family farm which had been part of the battleground at Yellow Tavern. She graduated from Westhampton College with a major in history, from Emory University with a degree in library science, and served on the library staff of the University of Richmond and the Kanawha County Public Library in Charleston, West Virginia. Since her marriage in 1957, Mrs. Atkinson has lived in King William County in the 18th Century farmhouse, “Wyoming,” which overlooks the Pamunkey River where Grant crossed with some of his troops in May 1864. She has served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Pamunkey Regional Library, as President of the King William County Historical Society, and is currently one of the lay speakers at Bethel United Methodist Church in Caroline County. Originally published by H. E. Howard, this is a paperback edition with some minor revisions.
