1 CD: History of the Presbyterian Church in Flemington, New Jersey, for a Century. With Sketches of Local Matters for Two Hundred Years
George S. Mott, D.D
(1894), 2006, CD, Graphic Images, Searchable, Adobe Acrobat, v6, PC and Mac, 138 pp, Heritage Books
This volume opens with a chapter on the first settlers who emigrated at the beginning of the 18th Century to escape religious persecution. These settlers, many of whom were Presbyterian, came from Scotland, Ireland, France, England, Holland and Germany and settled in Hunterdon County. These settlers were willing to fight for their newly adopted country's freedom, thus insuring their own religious freedom. The next chapter emphasizes the history of the Presbyterian Church in the Amwell Valley and Governor John Reading's part (as well as his descendants' part) in the establishment and growth of Presbyterianism. Once Flemington became the county-seat, the need for a church, separate from those already in existence in Amwell Valley, became apparent. This chapter shows exactly how the Presbyterian Church was established, as well as other churches of different denominations. Included as part of the history are lists of the pastors from 1791-1869; lists of elders (1797-1885), deacons (1869-1885), trustees (1792-1894) and members (1810-1894).
