This volume reflects 758 payments made by the Baltimore pension office to veterans (chiefly of the Revolution but also of the War of 1812 and wars in Florida and Mexico), their widows, or their surviving children. The record abstracts include such information as dates of death, remarriages of widows, identities of survivors, and the places and length of residence.

12 “Got My Mind Set On Freedom” Maryland’s Story of Black & White Activism, 1663-2000
Barbara Mills, Baltimore CORE Activist & Officer
(2002), 2007, paper, index, 714 pp, Heritage Books, Inc
Maryland has always been a state in the middle—part southern, part northern—both in the way it has dealt with race issues, and in the way it is perceived. It is the author’s hope that this detailed account of the black-white experience in Maryland will enable the reader to feel and appreciate the many battles fought to get where we are today—and to realize how far we still have to go to achieve freedom and equality for all. The enormous effort that went into organizing every lawsuit and every demonstration, and the deep emotions felt by the participants are reflected in these pages. The number of early lawsuits initiated by blacks themselves and recounted by the author is a surprising feature. Discussions include: early history; employment, public accommodations, education, housing, and continuing racial issues. A personal touch is added with the author’s account of her own participation in the civil rights movement in Baltimore in the 60s, with her ability to identify and interview persons she knew in CORE, and with her access to their saved clippings, papers, reports and correspondence. Numerous illustrations enhance the text. This book was a finalist in the Organization of American Historians Liberty Legacy Foundation Award in 2003.

16 Hunter Sutherland's Slave Manumissions and Sales in Harford County, Maryland, 1775-1865
Carolyn Greenfield Adams
(1999), 2007, 5˝x8˝, paper, indices, 144 pp, Heritage Books, Inc
Finding little in print of manumission records, Hunter C. Sutherland set about to collect what information he could from the extant historical records of Harford County including wills, property inventories and military records. The information in this book is based on data from more than five hundred documents, representing about 2,000 manumissions. Manumission records include the date of the manumission, last name, first name and the transaction details. Sales records include the date of sale, the seller's first and last name, buyer's first and last name, price, and the transaction details. The first index has fullnames of the sellers, buyers and manumitters; the second lists slaves by surname, while the third lists slaves without surnames.

These Honored Dead: A Roster of over 2,500 Maryland Union Soldiers Buried in National Cemeteries, Charles Albert Earp and Peter Lowry Johnston

17 These Honored Dead: A Roster of over 2,500 Maryland Union Soldiers Buried in National Cemeteries
Charles Albert Earp and Peter Lowry Johnston
2001, 5˝x8˝, paper, alphabetical, 306 pp, Heritage Books
During the Civil War, Maryland furnished 39 infantry, cavalry and artillery units to the Federal government for the defense of the Union. Over 62,000 loyal Marylanders, including over 9,000 African-Americans, served in these regiments or in the United States Navy and Marines. More than 4,500 Marylanders died from battle or disease. Some were fortunate enough to be brought home for burial, but many are interred in cemeteries throughout the country. These men and the sacrifices they made for our country have largely been forgotten. This roster was compiled not only to remember and honor these men, but also in the belief that it will be of value to the descendants of those who so nobly served our state and our Union.

Of Maryland’s numerous boundary disputes, that to the west was the last to be settled. It had its beginning in 1736, when surveyors for Thomas 6th Lord fairfax established the northwest corner of his vast proprietary at the source of a tiny trickle of water which they believed to be “the first or most distant fountain of the Potomac.”
