Hanging Katherine Garrett: A Novel based on the 1737 Trial of a Pequot Woman, Abigail Davis

16 Hanging Katherine Garrett: A Novel based on the 1737 Trial of a Pequot Woman
Abigail Davis
2003, 5˝x8˝, paper, 234 pp, paperback, Heritage Books
In present-day Minneapolis a graduate student, Karla Palmer, discovers a sermon that was preached at the 1738 hanging of Katherine Garrett, a Pequot Indian woman who was executed for the murder of her bastard child. The baby's body was found in the barn of a Congregationalist minister to whom Katherine was bound as a servant. She pled not guilty at her trial and records show that a huge courtroom scene ensued when the verdict was announced. Karla, smelling a cover-up, follows the obscured paper trail into the past, back to the Pequot War, searching for the identity of the person Katherine accused of the murder, for the name of the father, and for who might have conspired to send an innocent woman to the gallows to be “Hanged up by the Neck between the Heavens & the Earth until She be Dead, Dead, Dead.”

Chronicles of Border Warfare, or A History of the Settlement by the Whites, of North-western Virginia: and of the Indian Wars and Massacres in that Section of the State; with Reflections, Anecdotes, &c., Alexander S. Withers

17 Chronicles of Border Warfare, or A History of the Settlement by the Whites, of North-western Virginia: and of the Indian Wars and Massacres in that Section of the State; with Reflections, Anecdotes, &c.
Alexander S. Withers
(1831), 2007, 5˝x8˝, paper, index, 332 pp, Heritage Books, Inc
A treasure trove of descriptions of events from the perspective of the early settlers of the border regions beyond the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains (and extending as far as Cincinnati and parts of KY). Focuses mainly on the last half of the 18th century, when Williamsburg was the bustling capital of the Virginia Colony, and Patrick Henry resided in the Governor's Mansion. Grand plantations were flourishing along the James River, while in the wilderness, pioneers struggled against the elements of nature and the savages of the land they were trying to tame.

French and Indian War Aftermath: Notices Abstracted from Colonial Newspapers, Volume 5, Armand Francis Lucier

18 French and Indian War Aftermath: Notices Abstracted from Colonial Newspapers, Volume 5
Armand Francis Lucier
(2000), 2007, 5˝x8˝, paper, indices, 368 pp, Heritage Books, Inc
By 1760, the capitulation of Canada by the French and Canadians all but ended the French & Indian War. Blockaded by the powerful British Navy, the people of New France might have been lacking in provisions, but certainly not in fighting spirit. Attempts to retake Montreal and Louisbourg stretched the resources of the British forces, who also were fending off the Creeks and the Cherokees on the western frontier. As if that weren't enough, the best troops and generals in British service were sent to the West Indies, participating in fierce battles for control of Martinique and Cuba. Although the Treaty of Paris did not officially end the French and Indian War until 1763, the exciting events of the years 1761 and 1762 covered here are often glossed over in traditional history books. These newspaper abstracts allow the reader access to the same articles, eye-witness accounts, proclamations and commentaries avidly read and hotly discussed in ordinaries, public houses and taverns of Colonial America. The burning of the Cherokee villages, and the eventual peace that was made, is documented here. The movements of many regiments and ships can be easily followed, and the sorrowful plight of slaves on many of the ships is described with a sense of immediacy that cannot be captured in retrospective histories. The fullname plus subject index allows the reader to find soldiers, Indian tribes, ships' names, and regiments. Includes an 1874 map of Cherokee Country.

19 CD: 1880 Cherokee Nation Census
Barbara Benge
2000, CD, Searchable, Adobe Acrobat, v6, PC or Mac, 644 pp, Heritage Books
"One of the pivotal rolls used for eligibility status for enrollment, whether Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, Seminole or Freedmen was the 1880 Cherokee Nation census." This book is a transcription of the 1880 Cherokee Nation census, complete with census card numbers, which were added in 1900. The Dawes Commission used these census cards for tribal enrollment, and each tribe had their own census cards. Some persons may appear on multiple cards if they were adopted by an associated tribe, as in the case of the Shawnee and Delaware who often appear on Cherokee Census cards. There are also separate cards for the Freedmen of the tribe. Entries are grouped by districts-- Canadian, Cooweescoowee, Delaware, Flint, Goingsnake, Illinois, Saline, Sequoyah, Tahlequah and Orphans. Transcribed entries include names, race, age and sex, with additional remarks by the original census takers transcribed when legible. A census column notes the 1900 Dawes census card numbers with some 1883 and 1894 entries, and indicates dead for persons that died between 1880 and 1900. Marital status is noted with yes or no. A fullname index, with surnames corrected or unified whenever possible, enhances this work.
