This title refers to the fact that this volume is the middle volume of a series dealing with the older towns along, or near, the Eastern coast. The towns covered are Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, Newburgh, Tarrytown-on-Hudson, New York City, Brooklyn, Princeton, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Each chapter is written by a resident of the town presented. In addition to the information presented, each chapter is filled with illustrations to complement the text. As these chapters will show, the Middle States had a varied origin. The Dutch controlled the beginnings of European settlement along the Middle States seaboard. The infiltration of the English came from the New England colonies and by direct migration from England. In addition the Swedes, Germans, French Huguenots and Scotch-Irish Protestants all contributed to a cosmopolitanism not seen in the primarily English settlement of the Northern and Southern colonies.
