Three considerations prompted the writing of this volume. "Most of the principal actors in the organization have passed to the other side. Facts should be collected while those remain who can verify them." Rev. Thompson's pastorate began right after the organization of the church so the principal facts were well know to him and he had the leisure to gather the facts following his retirement from the church. In addition to the history of the church, this volume contains a list of Consistories, a list of members and two autobiographical sketches: one by the author and the other by the Rev. C. T. Anderson, his successor.

“Records remain from the beginning of the ministry of its first pastor, Rev. Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen.” The church may have been organized as early as 1717, but Rev. Frelinghuysen accepted the call to lead the church in 1720. This history covers the early organization of the church, the involvement of John Frelinghuysen with his father’s ministry, other pastors who answered the call to the church, a list of consistories by year, a list of members by year, and a brief genealogy of the Frelinghuysen family.
