He kept a diary from that day until the war ended a year later. He used his acute powers of observation to capture in writing some of the most important events of the great conflict. His regiment was sent to Fort Marcy, later, he went by rail to New York and by steamship to Savannah. He marched proudly as a fifer in the fife and drum corp as his regiment advanced to Richmond. By 1892, with the clear vision that comes with the passing of years, he understood the importance of preserving the record of the events he had witnessed. Using the diary to refresh his memory, he decided to write this book.
