About Author
I.L. Peretz, 18591915, captured the essence of Eastern European Jewish life in his writings. Born in Poland in 1859, he eventually settled in Warsaw and became a leader of the movement within the Jewish community to establish and develop Yiddish as a modern, secular, literary language. His early work was written in Hebrew and most of his later work in Yiddish. All of his writings are imbued with a warm understanding of Jewish life.
Esther Hautzig was born in Vilna and was deported with her family to Siberia, where she lived for five years. In 1947 she immigrated to the United States. She worked for many years in publishing and in the promotion of children's books, while writing books of her own. Since 1990 she has been a full-time writer as well as a volunteer for the New York Public Library and the New York City School Volunteer Program.
