HB Archives
Reg. Price: $40
2001, CD, Adobe Acrobat, PC and Mac, index, 4150 pp, Heritage Books
Contains: ***A Display of Heraldry - William Newton (1846). A profusely illustrated description of the art and science of heraldry. Illustrated with the arms of about 1800 families, but is not intended to be a dictionary of coats of arms. ***The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales Comprising a Registry of Armorial Bearings from the Earliest to the Present Time - Sir Bernard Burke, C.B., LL.D., Ulster King of Arms (1884). This work, intended to be a dictionary of arms, describes the shields, crests, and mottoes of some 60,000 families using standard heraldic nomenclature. *** An Alphabetical Dictionary of Coats of Arms belonging to Families in Great Britain and Ireland; forming an extensive Ordinary of British Armorials... - John W. Papworth, F.R.I.B.A., et al. (1874). Contains much the same information as Burke above, but it permits you to work backwards from a description of the arms. Thus it is an essential companion to Burke above. ***Fairbairn's Book of Crests of the Families of Great Britain and Ireland - James Fairbairn, et al. 4th ed. (1905). Consists of 2 main parts. Part 1 contains descriptions of crests in standard heraldic nomenclature arranged alphabetically by the name of their owner; mottos are also included. Part 2 contains engravings of a large proportion of the crests described. Thus given a surname one can find the crest and motto associated with various families of that name. ***Subject Index to Fairbairn's Book of Crests - A. R. Dickins, Arundel Herald Extraodinary (2000). New compilation, by an assistant to the current Garter King of Arms, provides an index to the crests illustrated in Fairbairn's work. It is based on the heraldic components of the crests, and makes it possible to work backwards from the description of the crest to the bearer of the arms.

Reg. Price: $29.00
(1893, 2001), 2009, 5˝x8˝, paper, index, 364 pp, Heritage Books
“Many are the incidents but faintly written in the pages of history, which would have forever remained dark and illegible, but for the light flashed on them by the torch of Heraldry. A shield of Arms, a Badge, or a Rebus depicted on a glass window, painted on a wall, carved on a corbel or monument, will frequently indicate, with unerring precision, the date to which such relics are ascribed, and whose memory they are intended to perpetuate, when all verbal descriptions are wanting; and the identity of many an old portrait rests on no other authority than that of a coat of arms painted at the side.” This handy volume offers a short history of the art form, followed by an extensive catalogue of terms, descriptions and diagrams explaining how to render and decipher any family arms. Over 400 illustrations depict the common elements of heraldic design, with individual chapters devoted to the particulars of English, French and American Heraldry, as well as the use of Arms when preparing pedigree charts and other genealogical documents.
